Inge Van Der Haegen is an artist who navigates the realms of sculpture, ceramics, and painting. She is captivated by the human body and how it reflects one’s emotional state. Her work often reveals the vulnerability and melancholy associated with the contemplation of life’s impermanence.
In her Headline Series, she explores the tension between melancholy and rebellion. The texts that appear in her works are like cryptic mantras, reminiscent of posters of idols in teenage bedrooms, serving as mirrors in their quest for self-identity. They stand as silent witnesses to the formation of their identity.
In her latest series, Rollin’ Souls, Inge draws inspiration from a documentary about Soul Skate—the biennial event hosted by iconic Detroit deep house producer and DJ Moodymann. The documentary shows how roller skating became a symbol of struggle and unity, and how this cultural dynamic shaped Detroit. Moodymann’s Soul Skate Party created a platform where skaters from all over the world merged in a dance of freedom and expression. The Rollin’ Souls series captures the energy of this community, the dancing movements, and the deep connection that defines them. Her works are intended to be visual poems that celebrate the soul of Detroit’s skate community. Freedom and unity captured in color and form. This series testifies to the joy and transformative power of skating, as an ode to the human desire for togetherness.
